When the Heat Is On—Surviving 46°C: How AviaSafe Runway Lights Keep Their Cool in Extreme Conditions

Hot enough for you this week? How did you cope - hugging the AC, or melting on the commute?

At the AviaSafe office in Frankfurt, the thermometer hit a staggering 46°C (106°F) - hotter than Greece, Spain, and even North Africa - as Europe sizzled in the heatwave.

We kept everyone hydrated with plenty of chilled water and relaxed the dress code, but it got us thinking: what’s it like to be a runway light in these conditions?

While our weather app said 34°C (93°F), the average concrete at Koln-Bonn Airport was actually 43°C (109°F) - hotter than Death Valley, Arizona.

That’s why every AviaSafe runway light goes through a rigorous testing programme. Each one is put through its paces in a special chamber that simulates extreme heat, arctic cold (down to -40°C), and high pressure - just to be sure. Our high-tech facilities recreate a lifetime of intensive use, so our products are ready for anything.

Why do we do it? Because runway lights are expected to perform flawlessly for up to 10 years, in all weathers, day in and day out.

At AviaSafe, we’re committed to making sure our products go the distance. Our torturous durability tests mean you can be confident in every AviaSafe product - wherever you are – as you navigate the world.
